The “Best in Show” presentation by “The Sunbelt Bridge” Team from Oakland School for the Arts.
The 26th Annual Bridge Showcase & Awards Event was held on Saturday, April 25, 2026 in Stanley Hall at UC Berkeley. The Judges were impressed with the unique designs created by student teams over the past nine weeks. The students were required to conceive, design and build each bridge to meet specific requirements using limited construction materials. The teams developed designs for the multi-function Third Street Bridge in San Francisco, which required a movable span to allow for water traffic, OR for a pedestrian and bicycle bridge across the Ashley River in Charleston, South Carolina, which required safety guardrails and bollards. The Teams presented a variety of unique designs and structural solutions to meet the specific scenario requirements. The overall “Best in Show” award was presented to The Sunbelt Bridge from Oakland School for the Arts. The bridge utilized a thematic concept using triple arches representing the sun’s path throughout the day as well as time itself. Additionally, the scale of the bridge was well defined, used materials efficiently, and featured clean edges with smooth, even paint. The OSA Team received the high scores from the Judges for their design, bridge construction, essay and oral presentation, making them stand out from the competition and take the top prize for the 2026 program.
Congratulations to The Sunbelt Bridge Team, and to all the students for completing the Student Impact Project! !
EAA would like to thank Matt DeJong and the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department at UC Berkeley for hosting the 26th Annual Bridge Showcase & Awards Event.
We would also like to extend a big thank you to our event Emcee, Janiele Maffei, as well as Robert J. Schroeder Photography, and WhaleCat Studios for capturing the highlights throughout the day.
In-School Program
There were 156 student teams from eight San Francisco, 12 East Bay, four Napa, and two Peninsula classes that participated in EAA’s program. Bay Area Firms provided more than 40 volunteer structural engineers and architects to teach the weekly curriculum.
Event Highlights
A festive atmosphere percolated through the event as Engineers Alliance for the Arts celebrated the 26th anniversary of the Student Impact Project.
The Keynote Address by the UC Berkeley Steel Bridge Team included information about the complex building and design competition. The presentation also featured interesting competition anecdotes and inspirational personal growth stories by the Team members. A video of the Keynote Address can be found below.
The Founder’s Award was presented to two Teams by special guest and EAA Founder, Ashraf Habibullah. We thank Ashraf and his company, Computer and Structures, Inc., for being our Anchor Sponsor and supporting our mission for over 26 years!
Winning Teams
Every student on a winning team received a trophy or medal. The awards and the program were made possible by the generous support of our donors.
